This past week officially found us celebrating summer vacation and summer bowling. It also heralded the arrival of a gaggle of teenagers at our home. And it's a good thing I love to entertain and feed people, because teens are always hungry.
An entire bag of chicken nuggets, several boxes of macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, and fruit and dip later, found their hollow legs full and they sat chillin' in the back yard.
In addition, My sister, Emily, one Emily's besties, and I took a day trip to the Pepperridge Farms bread outlet and the Polaris Shopping Mall. We were in search of a decent body covering bathing suit for Emily (which we did not find), but we did find some shorts. And for this trip, Emily had to get up early; and by early I mean 8:00 a.m.
I know! Can you believe I made my child get up before ten on a summer day. William also made his friends get up too in William Wakes Up. However, his friends were getting up to celebrate spring because a friend was coming. One by one William shakes his friends awake to help prepare the celebration cake and to clean the house util there is only one left in bed refusing to wake up. No matter what William and the others do, they just can't wake Racoon. That is until a knock at the door announces that the long awaited guest has arrived and it's time for cake.
But everyone agrees since Raccoon refused to get up and help it isn't fair that he should get cake. Raccoon seems truly repentant, however, and agrees to help the special guest, Blue Bird, build nests for his friends that have yet to arrive, thus earning him a piece of cake.
This is a beautifully rhymed book with exquisite pictures that oh so gently encouraged children and adults too I suppose to share in the work so they can share in the fun.
